Maddy looked into the bathroom mirror. She felt as if she had been transported back to the MTV era of the early 2000s. She had accepted an invitation from a Brooklyn brand and was going to attend a party that evening with the theme of the “Millennium Bug.”

When she stepped out of the subway station, it was completely dark. The warehouse was on the third floor of an old factory building. The stairwell was covered with fluorescent stickers, leading up to the Y2K party. As she pushed the door open, she saw young people wearing low-rise pants, sequined tops, and colorful hair clips, as if they had stepped out of a magazine from the turn of the millennium.

Maddy didn’t talk to anyone. She leaned against the wall, holding a plastic cup of soda in her hand and watching the moving figures on the dance floor. The music was familiar, and she still remembered dancing along to those MTV videos back then.

The soda was finished. She put down the cup and took a step toward the dance floor. The music continued, and she closed her eyes, letting the rhythm guide her.
